Work Programme

AINA’s annual work programme derives from its strategic framework document for the period 2008-2011.

The framework document is aimed at addressing the needs of operational, statutory navigation authorities that manage ‘live’ waterways.

The framework document identifies targeted outcomes in relation to five high priority issues that face navigation authorities.  The five priority issues are:

  • Funding.  Facilitating processes by which navigation authorities can gain access to higher levels of funding to maintain and develop their waterways for navigation and wider use for the benefit of all in their communities
  • Legal powers. The need to modernise the legal powers of navigation authorities
  • The cost of compliance.  Working with Government and stakeholders to assist the development and implementation of legislation and regulations in a cost-effective and proportionate way to minimise unnecessary or inappropriate cost burdens for navigation authorities
  • Safety.  The safety of all waterway users, waterway professionals and volunteers, and the associated legal liabilities of navigation authorities
  • Waterway data.  Improving the collection, collation and representation of good quality industry-wide data and statistics
  • Commissioning reseach.

Work programme delivery

AINA delivers its work by a variety of means including:

  • industry-wide project working groups;
  • industry workshops and seminars and an annual conference;
  • representations to Government and regulators through officials and ministers;
  • collaboration with waterway stakeholder organisations.
