Water Framework Directive

The European Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) is the most far-reaching piece of European legislation to affect the water environment.

It will benefit navigation authorities by giving further protection to their waters, but navigation authorities will have to play their part by modifying some of their practices which may increase their costs and add to planning times.

Navigation authorities should be actively involved in the implementation of the Directive to ensure that the economic, social and environmental value of their activities is recognised.
