2007 AINA Conference Announced

AINA's 2007 conference will focus on the Water Framework Directive - an important and far-reaching piece of European legislation that has been produced by the EU.

The Directive updates and consolidates existing EU water legislation, with the aim to establish a new, integrated (ecosystem based) approach to the protection, improvement and sustainable use of water.  The Directive came into force in 2000 and was transposed into law in the United Kingdom in 2003.

WFD includes all water bodies from rivers, estuaries and coastal waters to man-made water bodies such as canals and docks.  New ecological and chemical objectives will be set for each water body, with the aim of reaching 'good status' by 2015.  However, unlike many other EU environmental Directives, economics will be important in WFD decision making, with alternative objectives and exemptions being allowed provided certain tests are met.

This conference will assist the inland navigation community by addressing the implications of WFD - including obligations, costs and the timetable for action - for navigation authorities and a wide range of stakeholders associated with inland waterways including the trade.

The conference is being held at the City Conference Centre in the heart of London on 27th September 2007.  For more information and to download a copy of the registration form, click here
