On 29 February the Government laid before Parliament the draft order under the Public Bodies Act 2012 to transfer the functions of British Waterways to the Canal & River Trust. This is another important step towards the creation of the new charity.

The draft Order will be examined initially by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee in the House of Commons and the Merits of Statutory Instruments Committee in the House of Lords. Subject to Parliamentary approval, it is hoped that the new charity will be launched in June.

The Government has also lain before Parliament the draft Order to abolish the Inland Waterways Advisory Council (IWAC) which will also be considered by both Committees. Subject to Parliamentary approval, the Government intends to abolish IWAC when the Canal & River Trust is vested.

Government ‘Red Tape Challenge’ – Water & Marine Theme

AINA has accepted an invitation from Defra to be a member of Defra’s Sounding Board for the Water & Marine element of the government’s Red Tape Challenge.

Launched in 2011, the Red Tape Challenge aims to reduce the burden of unnecessary regulation on business and civil society.
